abc: lost university
ABC’s Lost has been one of television’s most popular series for 5 seasons. In order to reward their loyal fan base, ABC and Sony contacted Herzog and Company to help create an ambitious user experience for the Lost Season 5 Blu-ray release.
The proposal was to create a companion site for a BD-Live application which users could access through their Blu-ray player. The BD application, Lost University, was to be an interactive learning environment and would need a robust web component as a core requirement of its feature set. The website needed to offer expanded access to the disc’s informational content as well as providing users a tool for charting their progress through the disc portion of the experience.
With these requirements in mind, I set out to design the Lost University web site, a portal for Lost fans to take courses, view unseen footage and further interact with the Lost Season 5 Blu-Ray bonus feature.

How It’s Made
To meet the expectations of Lost fans, I designed a faux-university page in the style of many current educational websites, keeping my artistic style concurrent with work that had already been done for the Blu-ray disc. The web site featured interactive quizzes, an updateable user-profile page and access to periodically released web content and site news for Lost University. In addition, I designed a fully skinned implementation of the PHPBB forum software, so that users could seamlessly transition between the main website and its associated discussion forum without compromising the look and feel of the experience.
The Lost season 5 Blu-Ray application and the Lost University web site have both contributed to the popularity of the campaign, which is currently the most successful BD-Live project released by ABC / Sony Blu-ray to date.
